L. Blackburn, of Elk City, passed away at the Tisdal Hospital in Elk City on Friday May 13, 1927, after an illness of two weeks. Mrs. Blackburn was born in London, England, March 14, 1869, and with her parents came to America in 1871; they settled in Iowa living there for several years, later moving to Missouri, where Mrs. Blackburn grew to womanhood. In 1887, she was married to W. L. Blackburn. To this union, eight children were born, seven of whom survive; and have grown to manhood and womanhood. Mr. and Mrs. Blackburn came to Oklahoma in June 1901 and settled in Roger Mills county near Grimes; pioneers in this section, they set themselves to work to make a real home in the west through their efforts and those of their neighbors, schools were organized and a Sunday school was organized in the community. They lived on the farm until 1911 when they move (sic) to Sayre, living there until 1913 when they moved to Elk City. In 1919 she was stricken with a very bad attack of flu from the effects of which she was never fully able to recover. In 1923, they sold the paper and since that time she has devoted what energy was left to carrying out her work in the church and home. "Aunt Alice" as she was lovingly called by those who knew her best, was a woman of unusual ability and beauty of character; to her life meant only service to her fellow men. She was a member of the Methodist church from early girlhood and her church work was always first; she has been actively identified with the work of the W.C.T.U., both in the county and state; an ardent prohibitionist, she never missed an opportunity to say a good word for law enforcement. In the days when Woman's Suffrage was one of the leading issues she took much interest in passage of this law. Her last request that her friends of the Missionary society and W.C.T.U. should have a part in her funeral was faithfully carried out. Mrs. Standifer and Mrs. Willison, long time friends of hers, made talks at the funeral, which was in charge of her pastor, Rev. Brashear, now of Drumright. Interment was in the Elk City cemetery. (19 May 1927, Thursday, Erick Democrat, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): Mrs. Alice Blackburn, 58 years old, pioneer suffrage and W.C.T.U. worker of Beckham county, died at Elk City Friday after a long illness. She had assisted her husband and son in publishing the Elk City News-Democrat. The funeral will be held Monday. - Daily Oklahoman. The many friends of Mrs. Alice Blackburn (Aunt Alice) were grieved when this news came Friday that she had passed away. To have known this good woman was to love her. She will not only be missed by her loved ones and friends at Elk City, but throughout Beckham County. She always stood for the uplift of humanity. Was County President of the W.C.T.U., also was and had been County Secretary and Treasurer of the County Sunday School Association for several years. The sympathy of all go out to her loved ones in this their great hour of sorrow.
