He was born at Mindon, La., February 10, 1851. Removing from his native state at about the age of twenty one he settled in Tarrant county, Texas. In this and in Young and Haskell counties he remained until 1897, when he came to Oklahoma and took a claim in Roger Mills county near Berlin. He lived there on his farm until after the division of the county when he came to Sayre and engaged in the hotel business, building the Carmichael Hotel and running it for several years. On account of ill health he sold out and had not been in active business since. Mr. Carmichael held the office of county commissioner a number of years, serving in that capacity first in Haskell county, Texas, then two terms in Roger Mills and Beckham counties. After the death of Judge Rutherford in January last, he was appointed justice of the peace, which office he held at the time of his death. He was also secretary of the county election board, and for several years a member of the city school board. For many years he had been suffering from kidney or bladder troubles, which incapacitated him for hard work, and for the last four years caused great suffering, which he bore with great fortitude. At the end he was confined to his bed about eight days and his sufferings were intense. Mr. Carmichael was married on December 12, 1875 to Miss Margaret A. Ledbetter, to which union were born seven children, two daughters and five sons. Of these one son and one daughter are dead. All the others are living in Sayre, being: A. B.; H. F.; I. D.; Archie and Mrs. Chas. Seeber. All those, with his other son-in-law, Mr. N. E. Butler of Mangum, Okla.; one nephew, Mr. Henry Carmichael of Oklahoma City and eleven grandchildren were present at his bedside when he died. One brother in Limestone county, Texas was sick and unable to come in response to the message sent him. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
