E. Evens (sic), a farmer residing twelve miles northwest of this city, came to Sayre to consult physicians with regard to a hand from which he was suffering severely. It seems that about two weeks prior to that time he ran a sliver under a fingernail, and the hand swelled to a point where his suffering was intense. Speed & Windle found that the man suffered from a very bad case of blood poisoning, and as the last chance of saving his life amputated the hand. The poison has spread through his entire system, and the operation did not have the desired effect, and on Friday evening he passed away. Mr. Evens left a wife and five children in straightened circumstances, and the woman was endeavoring to sell one of her horses in the effort to defray the funeral expenses, when the attention of Alderman Brady was called to the matter. Mr. Brady attended the mass meeting at the Auditorium that night, and presented the matter to the consideration of those assembled, with the result that a sum was raised sufficient to pay all funeral expenses and leave $21.45 in a purse, which was handed to the widow. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
