(6 Feb 1930, Thursday, Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): Fred Gesell, Sr., pioneer farmer of Beckham county, died at his home, 12 miles north of Sayre, Sunday morning at 9 o'clock after a lingering illness of several months. Was Early Day Pioneer. Gesell came to Beckham county in 1905 when this country was only a stretch of bald prairie. He was born August 10, 1861, in Germany. In 1889 he married Miss Barbara Franz, and the young couple emigrated to the United States in 1890. To this union ten children were born of which number, six survive. Mr. and Mrs. Gesell settled at Clay Center, Kansas, upon coming to this country and lived there until 1895 when the family came to Orlando, Oklahoma. They lived there until 1905 then came to Beckham county. Gesell has lived a Christian life from childhood. He joined the Lutheran church at the age of 14. The deceased leaves to mourn his loss, besides Mrs. Gesell, six children as follows: Mrs. R. B. Needham, Oklahoma City; and five sons who live at Sayre; Charlie, Fred, Jr., Louis, Henry and Bill. Services were held at the Methodist church of Berlin at 2:30 o'clock, Monday, with Rev. G. W. Nichols officiating. Interment was in Berlin cemetery. Littrell & Moore in charge. (4 Feb 1930, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): GASSELL RITES HELD IN SAYRE. SAYRE. - Feb. 4 - Fred Gassel (sic), Sr., died at the family residence north of Sayre Saturday afternoon after an illness of short duration. Mr. Gassell is one of the early settlers and industrious farmers of this section of the county. Interment was made in Doxey-Sayre (sic) cemetery.
