The people of Sayre were shocked Sunday morning to learn that Ed Gurnea, the popular mail carrier on Route 1, was dead. He had been ill but a short time, so short that few knew that he was sick. Typhoid fever was the cause of his death. Edwin N. Gurnea was a little past 37 years old. He was an intelligent upright young man, and had the respect of the entire community. A wife and several children survive him. The funeral services were held Monday at the Christian Church under direction of the Modern Woodmen, of which order he was a member. Again we are reminded of the uncertainty of life, and that no one knows when his own turn may come to meet the grim reaper, Death. (21 Nov 1907, Thursday, Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): Died - Sunday, November 17, 1907, Edwin N. Gurnea, aged 37 years 1 month and 28 days, funeral was held Monday at the Christian church at 1 p.m. under the direction of the Modern Woodmen of America. Mr. Gurnea filled the position of carrier on rural route 1 out of Sayre since the route was established and was very popular with the patrons of the route. A wife and three small children and other relatives mourn his untimely demise. With the forethought of the faithful husband and father he was, he had taken the precaution to safeguard his family against possible want, in the event he should be removed from them by carrying a $2,000 policy in the M.W.A. ---------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
