(The Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, Ok, 25 Feb 1937): Pneumonia Attack is Fatal For Aged Woman Resident; Funeral To Be Thursday. Death claimed the second pioneer of the same family within two days Wednesday with the passing of Mrs. R. J. Hammon of Sayre. Her sister, Mrs. William H. Burch (should be Bunch), died Tuesday morning. Mrs. Hammon, mother of Garth Hammon of Sayre, succumbed at 5 o'clock Wednesday morning at her home on North Fourth street, following a brief illness. Pneumonia was given as the cause of her death. She was 85 years of age. Rites for Mrs. Burch (sic) were held at 2 o'clock Wednesday at the Prairie View Baptist church. Mrs. Hammon had been ill for a week. Rites for Mrs. Hammon will be held at 2:30 Thursday from the First Methodist church here. Rev. J. W. Trevette, pastor, will officiate at the rites, assisted by J. L. Davis, local minister. She became a member of the Methodist church 41 years ago. She was born November 9, 1852 at Kokoma, Ind., and had lived in Beckham county for many years being of the earliest settlers in this section. She is survived by three sons Claud Hammon of Elk City, Garth Hammon of Sayre, Pearl Hammon of Mangum and one daughter, Mrs. Bell Reyburn, Sayre. Her husband preceded her in death in 1933.
