Gottfried Hanni, one of the prosperous farmers and stock raisers of this section, died at the Elk City hospital on Saturday last. About a week since Hanni was stricken with appendicitis, and was taken to the hospital at Elk City for an operation, but medical skill proved unavailing, and he passed away as mentioned. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Doxey-Sayre cemetery, being conducted by Rev. S. R. Wells, an old neighbor and friend. The funeral was largely attended. We have no data for a biography of Mr. Hanni, but know that he leaves a wife and a family of grown children, who have the sympathy of this entire section in their hour of bereavement. Gottfried Hanni was not only one of our prosperous farmers, but he was a leader among those who believe that better farming pays, and had devoted much time to the raising of an improved class of livestock, year after year making exhibits to the county fair. Mr. Hanni was a German-American, as the term is generally applied, but during the trying days of the war he proved that he was at heart as loyal an American citizen as any native born, and standing staunchly for the country of his adoption. As a citizen he was strictly honest, and his dealings with his neighbors, and with the merchants of this city, always left a friend for Gottfried Hanni, and this entire section cannot feel otherwise than that in his passing we have lost an enterprising farmer and a devoted citizen and neighbor. ---------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
