HERSHEL (23 Mar 1939, Thursday, Sayre Sun, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): Carbolic Acid Dose Taken in California. Funeral services for Hershel Harvey, 34-year-old suicide victim, were held at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon at the Spring Creek church with Rev. R. F. McClung, pastor, officiating assisted by Rev. S. S. Elliott, Canton, and Rev. J. D. Horton, Amarillo. Harvey, despondent over financial reverses, took a lethal dose of carbolic acid Sunday morning at his home in Fresno, Calif. Only two months ago he sold his stock at Spring Creek to move to California. Harvey was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Harvey, Spring Creek, and a son-in-law of Mrs. Betty Carter, Sayre. The body arrived here at noon Wednesday and was taken to the home of the parents. He is survived by his widow. Interment was made at the Spring Creek cemetery by Littrell-Scroggins directors. (23 Mar 1939, Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): Word was received here today of the death of Hershel Harvey, former Beckham county farmer, who took his life by suicide Sunday morning at Long Beach, Calif. Details of his death were not learned. Mr. Harvey, who was well known in this county, had just moved to California to make his home. He had sold all his property here recently at a farm sale and moved to California. He was the son-in-law of Mrs. Betty Carter of Sayre. His body is to be shipped here for burial. Funeral services are expected to be held about Thursday. No details had been learned here today. Mr. Harvey had farmed for a number of years in the Spring Creek community and for the past year had lived in the Bulo community. Harvey of the Spring Creek community, will be held Thursday afternoon at the Spring Creek Baptist church, with Rev. R. F. McClung officiating, assisted by Rev. S. S. Elliott of the Canton Baptist church and Rev. J. D. Horton of Amarillo. Mr. Harvey, who was well known in this county, had just moved to California to make his home and was living in Long Beach at the time of his death. His death was caused by suicide. His body was returned here Wednesday noon and was taken to the home of his father at Spring Creek. He was the son-in-law of Mrs. Bettie Carter of Sayre.
