(19 May 1927, Sayre Journal, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): JIM HENSLEE Jim Henslee, age 57, pioneer settler who came to Beckham county was opened to settlement, died at his home on Indian Creek Sunday evening at 9:30. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ruby Witherspoon of Carter and Mrs. J. Witherspoon who with her husband made her home with her father. Interment was made in the Carter cemetery Monday afternoon. (20 May 1927, The Carter Express, Carter, Beckham Co, OK): Mr. J. S. Henslee, a pioneer citizen of this part of Oklahoma, died at his home on Indian Creek four and a half miles northwest of Carter, about 10:00 o'clock Sunday night, May 15th. Mr. Henslee had been in bad health for many months and had made two trips to the Mayo brothers hospital up in Minnesota, where he underwent an operation for his stomach trouble. What aid that he received at the hands of these noted surgeons it seems was only temporary in his case as his condition grew worse and he continued growing gradually weaker to the end. Mr. Henslee was not only well known in Carter and in this part of the county but was extensively known throughout Beckham County and adjoining counties as he was a pioneer settler of this part of Oklahoma. Having been one of the early settlers he was well known by the old pioneer citizens and many of his close friends were numbered among these early settlers of the country. Mr. Henslee was one of the best citizens that Beckham County possessed. He was a man who adored his family and loved and served his neighbors and friends. He was one of the strongest believers in altruism and the Golden Rule that the writer has ever met. His greatest ambition, it always seemed to us, was to render all the service that he could to his family and his fellowman. The remains were buried in the Carter cemetery Monday afternoon, Rev. T. J. Melton, pastor of the Methodist Church here, and Rev. Reels, a life long friend and neighbor of the deceased, having charge of the funeral services. Both preachers spoke of the honorable and upright life that Mr. Henslee had lived. The deceased left two children, Mrs. Ruby Witherspoon and Mrs. Viola Witherspoon, and their families, and other relatives, to mourn his passing away. He had one son, Lee, who died several years ago. His children were just as strongly devoted to him as he was to them and his daughters and their young husbands were grief stricken to have to give him up. They had nursed and cared for him for many months during his sickness and every attention possible was given to make him as comfortable as possible and to stay the ravages of the disease. A very large crowd of friends and relatives were present at the funeral to pay their respects to the memory of their departed friend. The Express family extends sympathy to the bereaved relatives in the death of their loved one. ---------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
