H. Himes, an old resident of this county died at his home in Benton, Ark., last night. C. L. and Carl Himes left today to attend the funeral. (8 Jun 1911, Thursday, Sayre Standard, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): Dr. Daniel Henry Hines (sic), was born in Ohio, his father moving to Montgomery Co., Indiana, when he was a small boy. At the age of eighteen he with three of his friends fitted up a wagon and team and started west. They journeyed to Douglas Co., Kansas, where he remained for several years and where in 1869, was married to Miss Kittie Colyar. Their union was blessed with eleven children, four dying in infancy and their married daughter, Daisy, dying in Memphis, Tenn., aged 21 years. The six children remaining are, C. L. and Carl Himes of Sayre; Mrs. Ida Bailey, Elk City; Mrs. Laura Wall, David C., and Clarence of Garvett, Ark. After his marriage every five or six years would find Mr. Himes in another place. He practiced medicine four years in Eureka Springs, Ark., and about three years in northwest Ark. and Indian Territory, finally landing in Oklahoma, and filed on a claim, three and a half miles east of Sayre. After moving to Oklahoma he gave up practicing medicine and devoted all his time to farming. He lived on this farm until about two years ago when he traded it for one in Benton Co., Ark., where he died last Friday morning, May 26th. Dr. Himes was a hard working man, full of energy; was a good conversationalist, sociable and was loved by all who knew him. He was 64 yrs. 1 month and 26 days old and leaves a wife and six children to mourn their loss. He and his wife have been members of the Dunkard church for nearly thirty years and it was his wish that the brethren of that church should officiate at his funeral, so he was brought to Sayre on Monday and that afternoon services were held at the home of his son, C. L. Himes, Rev. Wells, of near Berlin preaching the funeral sermon. He was laid to rest in the Doxey-Sayre cemetery. The many friends extend their deepest sympathy to the family. ---------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
