(11 Aug 1927, Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): Was at El Paso on His Way to Hot Springs, New Mexico. On Thursday forenoon last a telegram was received here announcing that T. J. Hurley, a well known resident of this city, had dropped dead at El Paso, Texas. Mr. Hurley left here to spend a few weeks vacation at Hot Springs, New Mexico, and had arrived in El Paso less than an hour before his death. Mr. Hurley had been in the employ of the Rock Island railroad in this city for a little over twenty years, having charge of the water supply at this point, and was widely known and highly respected, especially by the railroad men with whom he came in daily contact. Mr. Hurley had not been in good health for some time past and this trip was for the purpose of taking a course of baths at Hot Springs. The remains were brought to this city Tuesday morning and funeral services held at the Catholic church at 10 o'clock yesterday morning, with Rev. Father Gearheart of Elk city, officiating. The services were largely attended by friends and a large number of his fellowmen employed by the Rock Island. Mr. Hurley was born in England, coming to this country when twelve years of age, his parents settling at Rochester, New York. Shortly after attaining his majority he came to Willow Springs, Missouri, and during his residence there was married to Miss Lucretia Warner, who passed away some fourteen years ago. In 1898 they moved to Belleville, Texas, and in 1901 came to Western Oklahoma homesteading a farm nine miles southeast of this city. Having previously been employed as a railroad man, January 1, 1907, he moved to this city and entered the employ of the Rock Island railroad, and was still in their employ at the time of his death, having established a reputation as a trusted and reliable employee. Mr. Hurley is survived by five children, all grown to manhood and womanhood: Tim L. and Emmett, of Tucumcari, New Mexico; Dan, of Amarillo; Miss Mary Hurley and George Hurley of this city. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
