Lewis for a number of years was engaged in the car business in Sayre. Coming here in 1902 and moving to Erick in 1917. Since that time he was a member of the corporation, Lewis Motor company here, which is now the Flaxman Motor company. In Sayre and throughout the county he was well and favorably known in business and socially. The Lewis home in Erick and when they lived in Sayre was noted as a mecca for social functions. Concerning the passing of Ed Lewis, the Erick Democrat (from 12 Apr 1928) carried the following: "The City of Erick was visited by the grim reaper on last Friday, April 5th, and took from our midst one of our pioneer business men, leaving a vacant place that will never be filled, leaving a greeting that no other can bestow, and a memory of love and respect in the hearts of those who knew him that will remain forever. Ed Lewis was born in Bellville, Texas, March 19, 1876, and came to Oklahoma in 1902 locating at Sayre where he was in the garage business and Ford Dealer until June 1st, 1917, when he came to Erick to follow the same business and was in this kind of business up until a short time ago when he retired from active business affairs on account of his health. Having been in poor health for the past year, Ed realized that his time on this earth was short and had so arranged his business affairs that they could be easily handled. He was a devoted husband and father, his boys, Elmer and Bud, were his pals. He donated liberally to charity and had made several loans to friends without notes or interest that his family knew nothing of up until a short time before he died. His body was taken to Oklahoma City Saturday morning and at the Marshall & Harper Funeral Home funeral services were held by the Dr. Joseph Blatt. Friends from Erick, Sayre, Elk City, Norman, Oklahoma City, Plainview, Texas and many other places were in attendance and the floral array numbered above 70 sprays as a last respect of love to a dear friend. His body was laid to rest at the Fairlawn Cemetery in the family burial lot along side of his father and brother Sunday afternoon. A. G. Gillum, H. C. Garrett, C. S. Borin, G. E. Harris, Sam Blonstein, Sam Douglas, Judge J. B. Harrison and E. L. Ray, Pall Bearers." --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
