(25 May 1922, Thursday, Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): DIED. Highly Respected Resident of Section West of Sayre. J. S. Martin, a highly respected resident of the section four miles west of Sayre, died at an early hour Saturday morning after an illness of about ten days. However, Mr. Martin had been very feeble for a couple of years past, and when his age, 83, is considered, his death could not have been unexpected by his relatives and friends. The funeral services were held from the Lone Oak church on Saturday afternoon, with Rev. G. W. Nichols officiating, and the remains were laid at rest in the Lone Oak cemetery. Mr. Martin has been a resident of this section for about twelve years past, during which time he gained a wide acquaintance, and his jovial disposition made him a host of friends, all of whom will join with the Headlight in extending sympathy to the bereaved family. Obituary. James Martin was born April 19, 1839, in West Virginia. He was first married to Mrs. Lasky. To this union three girls were born. After the death of his first wife, he was married to Mrs. Sarah Castner, March 17th, 1889. To this union, three children were born. He was ordained as a minister of the gospel in the Methodist church in 1895 by Bishop Hamack, near Ardmore, Oklahoma. He is survived by his wife and four children, two sons and two daughters: Mrs. Naomi Hart, of Oklahoma City; Eugene Martin, of Centralia, Washington; Cornleius, of Sayre; and Mrs. Leona Burns of Seattle, Washington. His two sons were at his bedside when the death angle (sic) came. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
