(13 Feb 1913, Sayre Standard, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): Sudden Death of Mrs. Mayes Mrs. Ed Mayes died suddenly Wednesday afternoon at her home at Erick. At 1:30 p.m. she was downtown at her husband's store, apparently in the best of health, and it was therefore a shock and a surprise to her friends when her death was announced at 3:30 p.m. (13 Feb 1913, Thursday, Erick Altruist, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): Never before in the history of Erick has there come to our citizenship such a bewildering shock as was present last evening when the saddening intelligence was circulated that "Mrs. Mayes is dead" within fourty (sic) eight hours next prior to the printing of this paragraph several hundred of us had seen Mrs. Mayes in the full bloom of vivacious womanhood in the prime of life and apparently in robust health with a gladsome smile and cheering word for everyone with whom she came in contact, and we would have been loath to believe that death for her was near at hand as she went about her usual vocation yesterday morning. Soon after noon, however, she felt the need of a physician's attention and Dr. Warford was summoned. Responding Dr. Warford arrived at the Mayes home about two o'clock and was in attendance upon Mrs. Mayes from then until she died. Soon after Dr. Warford arrived he observed that Mrs. Mayes vitality had become so alarmingly insufficient that he called Dr. McCreery into consultation and Dr. McCreery in turn called in his partner, Dr. Tilton these three doctors did their utmost to preserve the life of Mrs. Mayes but without avail and she died at 8 o'clock last evening after having been in a semi-conscious condition for about five hours. Mrs. Cleo P. Mayes was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse M. Barbre who live near Prentiss, Okla., she was born in LaVaca County, Tex., Feb. 17, 1873 and came to Oklahoma in 1898 she was married to Mr. Ed Mayes in January 1892 and to them were born six children viz Eunice, Roy, Raymond, Ethel, Tom, Clarence and Jesse all of whom except the eldest lived with their parents. Miss Eunice is married to John W. Osborn and lives at Bay, Ark. Mrs. Mayes together with her husband Mr. Ed Mayes had been engaged in the mercantile business here for the past four years and was possessed with fine business ability. Her business career is responsible for her having a very wide circle of acquaintance and by all who knew her she was highly esteemed for her gentle cheering personality and her unselfish devotion to her husband, her children, her parents and brothers all of whom were especially dependent upon her because of her splendid qualities of genuine womanhood to her heartbroken husband and bright children ranging from five years up. As we go to press efforts are being made to get the message to her two eldest children, Mrs. Osborn and Roy, also to her brother of Denver, Colo., and to others less nearly akin to her. The funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday Feb. 14 conducted by her pastor Rev. C. M. Powell at the Baptist Church and interment made at the Erick cemetery. The Post office and all business houses will be closed during the hour of the funeral for it unquestionaly is the desire of all who were Mrs. Mayes neighbors that the utmost respect be shown in memory of her. Her bereaved loved ones have the most sincere sympathy of all who knew her and this circle of acquaintances embrace everyone within a radius of several miles of Erick.
