Bowie Reed, commonly called "Red", who had been sick for several weeks past of pneumonia, expired at 5 o'clock Sunday morning. He has been a resident of this section for years and has a large acquaintance. Among his relatives and friends that came to take a last look at him Sunday were the Mr. and Mrs. Lon Parish of Doxey, Miss Lea Huff of Cheyenne, and Mrs. Reed, mother of the deceased. He was taken to Cheyenne (Roger Mills county) for burial. (27 Mar 1902, Elk City Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Bowie Reed of Cheyenne died last week at Sayre of pneumonia. A few days before his death he was in perfect health and it was a surprise to all who knew him to learn of his sudden demise. He was known as "Red Reed" and was the most popular cowboy in Oklahoma. His disposition was that of a woman. Honest, honorable and generous to a fault; loved by all who knew him; young in years, with a perfect physique. When the Master called he arose from his prairie couch, saddled his pony, gathered up his larriet, swung into the saddle and as the setting sun reflected its light over the darkening east pointed his faithful pony's head toward the setting sun and slowly rode over the Divide. May his camp-fire ever shine for those that follow. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
