It was a severe shock to all old time residents of the county who have known the Richersons and together they bore the hardship of the frontier life since the early settlement of this country. Mrs. Richerson was one of the best known and loved women in our community and was wonderful and a christian lady. Miss Alice Holden, a native of Wise county, Texas, was married to J. R. Richerson in 1879; following which they made their home at Mobeetie, the old time county seat of Wheeler county and at that time the metropolis of Panhandle and much of what is now southwest Oklahoma. On April 19th, 1892, the day of the opening of the Cheyenne and Arapahoe reservation, they came to this territory and took up a homestead on Timber creek, six miles east of Sayre in what was then organized as Roger Mills county. Mr. and Mrs. Richerson have lived in this section since the early opening and they have enjoyed the advancement of the section as only those who have endured the hardships of the early days could. Mrs. Richerson is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Dora Smith of Erick, and Mrs. Lilley Heilmen of Kansas; and one son Harvey of Sayre, (one son James and daughter Ida, preceded her in death), her husband, J. R. Richerson and a host of life long friends. Funeral services were held Monday November 12th at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church, Rev. T. N. Weeks officiating. --J. R. Coulson of Oklahoma City attended the funeral of his grandmother Mrs. Richerson Monday. Mrs. Lillie Heilmen of Madison, Kansas, attended the funeral of her mother Mrs. Richerson Monday. (15 Nov 1928, Thursday, Erick Democrat, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): Mrs. Alice Richerson, wife of James R. Richerson of Sayre died at the family residence on north Third street in Sayre on Saturday, November 10th, 1928, at 4 p.m., from an acute attack of heart failure. Mrs. Richerson had been attending to her regular household duties, when she was seized with the attack and died within a few minutes. Mr. and Mrs. Richerson are pioneer citizens of Beckham County, having come to this country many years before statehood, they lived on the homestead near Doxey for a number of years, then moved to Sayre where they lived since statehood; Mr. Richerson being the first sheriff of Beckham county. Mrs. Richerson endeared herself with all with whom she came in contact by her charm of manner and kindly sympathy for humanity; her friends were numbered by her acquaintances and her kindly ministrations to the poor and unfortunate will be missed. The funeral services were held at the First Methodist Church by her pastor, Rev. T. N. Weeks; Mrs. Richerson was a faithful member of this church and her loss will be greatly felt. The floral tributes were numerous and lovely. The remains were laid to rest in the Sayre-Doxie (sic) cemetery. Mrs. Richerson is survived by her husband, J. R. Richerson; Mrs. Fred Smith of Erick; Mrs. (sic) Harvey Richerson of Sayre and a daughter in Kansas, all of whom attended the funeral; also by a number of grandchildren and several brothers and sisters. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Smith, Miss Myrtle Smith and Paul and Mr. and Mrs. O. R. Wallace attended the funeral of their mother and grand-mother, Mrs. Jim Richerson at Sayre Monday. Mr. Robert Richerson and wife went to Sayre Monday to attend the funeral of his aunt Mrs. Richerson. (22 Nov 1928, Thursday, Erick Democrat, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): CARD OF THANKS We wish to thank the good people of Erick for their beautiful floral offering and kind words of sympathy extended to us in the sudden death of our dear mother, also to thank Mrs. Gillum and Mrs. Galloway for the special number rendered at the funeral. May God's richest blessing be on you all. J. R. Richerson. Mrs. Fred Smith. Harvey Richerson. Mrs. Lillian Heilman. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
