Sheets was born March 18, 1860 in Grayson county, Virginia, near Independence. He was married to Nancy L. Lovelace, March 13, 1879. To this happy union were born eight children, three of whom have preceded him to the better world, one in infancy, and two of recent years. Mrs. D. P. Lambert, June 9, 1920, and Mrs. Pate Williams, September 15, 1920, and dear companion only a few months ago. Bro. Sheets was converted in early life and joined the Methodist church of which he was a faithful member until his death which came September 24, 1923 at 1:45 p.m. Five children are left to mourn their loss, three girls and two boys, and a host of friends. Their beautiful devotion to him all their lives is the answer for all the love he lavished upon them. The forty-four years of happy married life are too sacred for this pen to undertake to portray. (30 Sep 1923, Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): W. J. Sheets, a pioneer resident of the section southeast of this city, died Tuesday afternoon at the residence of his son, R. B. Sheets, in this city. Funeral services were held from the Methodist church yesterday afternoon with interment at the Doxey-Sayre cemetery. Mr. Sheets was a gentleman highly respected by all who knew him, and connected with the death of his wife, who preceeded him by a few months. Mr. and Mrs. Sheets had worked very hard all their lives, and under adverse circumstances. They owned a sand farm southeast of this city and during the excitement last spring sold a lease for $4,000 in cash, and were looking forward to a few years of ease. Three days after they received this money Mrs. Sheets died very suddenly, and now Mr. Sheets has passed away, just when he was in a position to enjoy life, and reap a little enjoyment from his hard labors. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
