(25 Mar 1926, Sayre Journal, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): BENJAMIN SHOTWELL Benjamin Shotwell, age 72, died at the family home on Fourth Street, Friday morning at 6 o'clock following a stroke of paralysis while out at the S. S. Moore farm near Doxey, Wednesday. Mr. Shotwell and family came here a number of years ago from Nebraska and owned and operated the Shotwell Dairy for a number of years near Sayre. Of recent years he has been a resident of Sayre and has retired from active business life. A large host of friends of Mr. Shotwell's and of his family throughout the western part of the state mourn his death and sympathize with the family. The remains were laid to rest at the Buffalo cemetery west of Sayre following the funeral services held at the Methodist church conducted by Rev. J. T. Means of the Presbyterian church. Great numbers of beautiful flowers banked the alter and the services were impressive. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Benjamin Shotwell, three daughters, Mrs. A. M. Cuff of Clinton, Mrs. May Bennett of Sayre and Mrs. Pearl Davis of Iowa; three sons, Lawrence of Sayre, Eli of Cheyenne and Roy of Sentinel. All the children were here for the funeral. (1 Apr 1926, Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): B. H. Shotwell, a pioneer resident of this city and section, was stricken with paralysis late last Wednesday afternoon, and while everything was done, he passed away at an early hour Friday morning. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in this city at 11 o'clock Sunday morning, with Rev. J. T. Means officiating, after which the remains were taken to the Buffalo cemetery, northwest of this city, for interment. (8 Apr 1926, Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): Benjamin H. Shotwell was born near Blenheim, Ontario, Canada, on August 23, 1853, being 72 years of age at the time of his death. In 1876 he was married to Miss Melissa Lowes, and three years later moved to Nebraska, where he remained until he came to Oklahoma in 1906. On his arrival in this state he first settled on a farm near Buffalo, but the following year moved to the farm known as the Shotwell dairy farm, now owned by Dr. O. N. Windle, one-half mile west of the northwest corner of this city. Between three and four years ago this farm was sold to Dr. Windle, and the family moved to this city, occupying the residence on North Fourth street, where Mr. Shotwell passed away. Mr. Shotwell is survived by his wife and six children: Mrs. Maggie Bennett, of this city; L. E. Shotwell, farming near this city; Eli L. Shotwell, of Cheyenne; Mrs. O. L. Davis, of Lenox, Iowa; Roy Shotwell, of Sentinel; and Mrs. A. M. Cuff, of Clinton. Another son, Charles W. died in 1905, while the family resided in Nebraska. During his residence in this section Mr. Shotwell has gained a wide acquaintance and was highly respected by all who knew him, and a host of personal friends will join with us in extending sincere sympathy to the bereaved family. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
