Steele, mother of Postmaster C. E. Steele, died at 1 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the home of her son, on Fourth street. The funeral services were held from the house on Sunday afternoon, with Rev. H. O. Moore officiating. The interment was at the Doxey-Sayre cemetery. Rilla Fletcher Steele was born May 10, 1854, at Fredonia, Kentucky, moving with her parents, at the close of the civil war, to Tennessee, where she married and reared her family, consisting of two daughters, Mrs. Hattie Sardin, of McGhee, Arkansas, Mrs. H. H. Adams of Sunnyside, Utah, and one son, C. E. Steele, of this city. During the past fifteen years she has really made her home with her son in this city, although spending a portion of the time with her daughters. During the past year she has been in very poor health, being confined to her room the greater part of the time, and her death was not unexpected. The patience and fortitude with which she met her suffering won the friendship of all who knew her. She became a christian in early life, uniting with the Baptist church, of which she was a member at the time of her death. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
