W. Stephens was born in Forsyth county, Georgia, October 23, 1853. She was sixty-nine years five months and seven days old. Departed this life March 30, 1923. She professed religion at the age of thirteen years and joined the Missionary Baptist church and was a most devout christian all of her life. Funeral services were held on March 31, with Rev. Hayes officiating. Interment was in the Carter cemetery. She was the mother of eight children, six of whom are still living. They are J. L. Stephens of Greenwood, Texas; Mrs. J. B. Reeves of Belcherville, Texas; Mrs. J. H. Bundy and Mrs. R. L. Kelly of Carter, Oklahoma; and Mrs. Timothy Hurly, of Tucumcari, New Mexico. (Note: Only five children named). These children with her husband and father, J. W. Stephens, are left to mourn her loss. Although we should not mourn for her as she is now free from suffering. The last thirty-five years of her life was filled with pain and suffering which she bore with sweet christian patience. Her death was really beautiful. She fell asleep quietly and peacefully on Good Friday, the most wonderful day on which our blessed Christ died for us, and we believe that like Him her spirit rose with victory and triumph on the realms of sweet bliss. (6 Apr 1923, Carter Express, Carter, Beckham Co, OK): GRANDMA STEPHENS DIES Grandma Stephens, wife of Uncle Johnnie Stephens, died at her home west of Carter and was burried (sic) in the Carter cemetery on Saturday afternoon. Although her health had not been good for a long time, she was only taken seriously ill on Thursday and her death was very unexpected. Mrs. Stephens has lived in this country a long time and has many friends who sympathize with her husband and other relatives in their bereavement. She has two daughters, Mrs. R. D. (sic) Kelly and Mrs. J. H. Bundy, living in the Retrop community. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
