W. Tedrowe, of Elk City died last Thursday afternoon at 5:30 o'clock while under the influence of drugs administered for the purpose of performing a surgical operation. The remains were shipped to Indiana, her former home, for burial. (17 Jul 1913, Elk City Record, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): The entire town and surrounding community were plunged into sudden gloom when the dread words were whispered about last Thursday afternoon, July 10th, from the Frances Hospital that Mrs. Tedrowe is dead. Such was her spirit, that none but her most intimate friends knew that a serious and almost hopeless operation was inevitable. While all knew that she had not been strong for months, still none even dreamed what agonies she was enduring. She always wore a smile and had a friendly word for all, keeping her sufferings to herself for fear of casting a shadow of gloom on any of her friends. Her influence over the boys and young men was marvelous; her every thought was of them and for them; her home, their home; their joys and sorrows, hers. In February of this year, the need grew so great in the city for a Young Men's Co-Operative Sunday School Class, that at the request and promise of a club room, from the pastor of the M. E. Church South, she took charge of and organized the Y.M.C.C. that will, though she was taken from them at the beginning of their work, be a wonderful power for good through years to come. Mrs. Pearl Tedrowe (nee Simms) was born February 22nd, 1876, was married at Indianapolis, Indiana, to Dr. C. W. Tedrowe, September 28, 1893. To them was born two children, John on November 1, 1894, Josephine on December 1, 1895, who died June 11, 1896. They moved from Indianapolis to Cheyenne, Oklahoma about 1900, where they lived until five years ago, when they moved to Elk City, where they have lived since. She joined the Presbyterian church when young and has been a faithful Christian through life. She underwent an operation July 10th at 1 o'clock p.m. for abdominal adhesion, surviving only a short time, dying at 5:30, the same day. A brief, though impressive service was held at the home at midnight, attended by a host of loving friends, and her class of boys where she was taken at her request for the last time. The remains were taken to Indianapolis for burial, the same night, accompanied by the bereaved husband and mother. She leaves behind to mourn her husband, Dr. C. W. Tedrowe, a son John, who could not be with her at the last but met the remains at their destination, her mother Mrs. Simms of Blackwell, Oklahoma, two sisters and one brother. May God's richest blessings and comforting hand, rest on the sorrowing loved ones. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
