Whitehurst, pioneer resident and builder of Sayre and Beckham county, who succumbed at an Oklahoma City hospital Tuesday. Whitehurst's heart failed him after undergoing a major operation on Monday. The deceased came to Sayre in 1903, and entered into the mercantile business. His boundless energy was unleashed upon the proposition of building the city of Sayre. He was always a civic booster. He took an active and important part in the county and fight, which resulted in Sayre being selected as the county capital. He built the first two story brick building to be constructed in the city. Old time acquaintances declare that he probably had more to do with the building of Sayre than any other man. A strong democrat, Whitehurst always took an active part in local and state politics. He was a member of the first legislature from Beckham county after statehood. Whitehurst was a member of the Baptist church and a thirty-second degree mason. He will be buried at Oklahoma City Friday. The decedent was a brother of Hon. J. A. Whitehurst, president of the state board of agriculture for eight years and Harry Whitehurst of Shamrock, Texas. He is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters. Because of his likeable personality and due to his genuine worth hundreds of friends in Beckham county and over the entire state to mourn his loss. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
