(7 Jan 1915, Sayre Standard, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): Death of Martin S. Whitehurst. Martin S. Whitehurst, one of the pioneer residents of Sayre and a citizen who was held in the highest esteem and universally honored and respected by all who knew him, died at the home of his son, W. H. Whitehurst, in this city at 11:45 o'clock, Thursday night, December 31, 1914, after a prolonged illness. At his bedside when the end came were his aged wife and three sons, John A. Whitehurst, George C. Whitehurst and W. H. Whitehurst. Martin S. Whitehurst was born May 9th, 1845, and died at the advanced age of 69 years, seven months and twenty-two days. The funeral services were held at the Baptist church, of which the deceased was a member, at 2:30 o'clock Friday, January 1st, 1915, Rev. J. E. Gwatkin, pastor of the Baptist church, officiating, followed by funeral services by the Masonic order at the Sayre cemetery. In his sermon Rev. Gwatkin paid a high tribute to the life and character of the deceased, words of commendation which all who knew him fully appreciated because they were so appropriate and so truly portrayed the life and deeds of an honored citizen.
