Shepherd, 103 years, a Civil War Veteran, died Wednesday, April 27, in the Oklahoma Confederate Home at Ardmore after a long illness.  John D. Shepherd, believed to be the oldest native Texan, and  (Picture) the last Confederate survivor in Oklahoma, was born in what is now Burnet County, Texas, on November 15, 1846, the year after Texas was admitted to the United States. His parents moved to Texas from Tennessee in 1840.  Shepherd, during his boyhood, learned the cattle business, and after serving in the Civil War, having enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1861, he made the first cattle drive from Texas to Chicago, and several others afterwards. Eighteen months were required for the cattle drives, consisting of thousands of Texas Longhorns.  Shepherd was married to Margaret Bell in 1874.  He made the run into the Cheyenne-Arapaho county in 1893.  He was made Colonel of the Confederate Army by the Sons and Daughters of the Confederacy in 1947, and finally made General in 1948.  Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. J. M. Bryant, Clinton, Okla.; Mrs. C. T. Witherspoon, Fort Worth, Texas; a son, J. S. Shepherd, Elk City, Okla.; a number of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.  Funeral services were conducted Thursday, April 28, in Wichita Falls, Texas at the Owens & Brunley Chapel. Burial was in Riverside cemetery.   H.
