In the mid 1960's Lyndell bought a home on 5 acres of land a few miles south of the Merritt community, Oklahoma. The Elk City Daily News, Monday, November 10, 1980, pg 2 Mr. Vaught's Services Set Funeral services for Lyndell Vaught, Rt. 4, Sayre, will be conducted from the Martin Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. James Perkey officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairlawn Cemetery. Mr. Vaught was born in LeFlore County, Okla., on Dec. 12,(sic) 1921 (sic) and died Saturday in Hodges Nursing Home at the age of 58. He was a retired civil service employee, a plumbing contractor and had served his country in World War II in the Air Force. He was married to Margaret Music in Wheeler, Tex., on June 21, 1944(sic) and she survives him. He had lived all(sic) of his life in the Elk City area except(sic) for the time when he lived in Santa Rosa, Tex., where he graduated from high school. He was a member of the American Legion and of the Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife Margaret of the home; 2 sons, Larry Vaught of Elk City and Lynn Vaught, Jr. of Carter; 1 daughter, Mrs. Ed (Linda) Cook of Elk City, 3 brothers, Buster Vaught and Leslie Vaught of Elk City and Jake Vaught of Canute; 1 sister, Mrs. Raymond (Fannie) Melvin of Okmulgee; 7 grandchildren, Jamey, Angie and Lorie Cook of Elk City; Chris and Shelly Vaught of Elk City and Rodney and Cody Vaught of Carter, and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Norma Lackey of Elk City. The casket will be closed following the funeral services but friends may call by the Martin Funeral Home to pay their respects. Note: Oklahoma grade school record in 1928 has the correct birthdate of December 18, 1919. Lyndell appears in the 1920 census completed in late January 1920 as a month old infant. The headstone year 1921 date appears to be based on one of the known changes made to his birth records when in high school in Texas so he could play in sports. 1921 was used thereafter in other official documents. December 18th on the headstone matches the grade school records and when his daughter says they celebrated his birthday. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
