(11 May 1905, Thursday, Elk City Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): E. M. Allen passed away last Sunday evening quite suddenly. He had been a great sufferer from kidney trouble for years, and becoming despondent took an over-dose of laudnum (sic) which resulted in his death. He was buried Monday. (Unidentified newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Mr. E. A. Allen, who had resided for several months in Elk City, because of ill health, took an overdose of laudanum last Sunday evening and before physicians could reach his bedside he was beyond medical aid. A stomach pump was used, but the drug had already gotten in its works and all efforts failed to revive him. For some time Mr. Allen had shown signs of despondency, but it was not feared by his family that he would do anything rash. His mind had been somewhat unbalanced for several months according to a statement given out by Mr. McComas, his attending physician. Mr. Allen was an old federal soldier and drew a pension. His financial affairs were not such as to cause him to destroy his own life, and no reason can be given except ill health and worry. He leaves a wife and several grown children, most of whom are married and do not reside in Elk City. Mr. Allen was about 60 years of age. The remains were interred Monday at Elk City cemetery after funeral services conducted at the Methodist church. (10 May 1905, Elk City Record, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Sunday afternoon, Mrs. E. M. Allen of this city went calling on one of the neighbors. When she returned she found her husband, E. M. Allen, in an unconscious condition. Drs. Standifer and Levi attended the unfortunate man. With the use of the stomach pump they found he had taken a over dose of laudanum. Mr. Allen has been a great sufferer for several years and for some time his friends have thought his mind was somewhat unbalanced. Whether he intended by this to end his suffering or took the deadly drug to give him ease temporarily is a matter of conjucture (sic). The funeral was from the M. E. Church South, Monday afternoon, and conducted by the pastor of that church, Rev. I. N. Crutchfield. Card of Thanks. We wish to extend our sincere thanks to neighbors and friends who so kindly assisted us after the death of our husband and father. We especially thank Mrs. Charles White and Mr. Gunnigill for kindnesses rendered. Respectfully. Mrs. Bessie Allen, Roy Allen.
