(1 Jan 1903, Thursday, Elk City Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Seth Allen, a prominent farmer residing near Doxey committed suicide by hanging himself last week. The only motive known for his rash act was that he had brooded over results of a surgical operation so much that he had become temporarily insane. The bereaved family have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community in their sad affliction. (2 Jan 1903, Friday, The Sayre Enterprise, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): SETH B. ALLEN A SUICIDE. The people were shocked to hear that Seth H. (sic) Allen, a well known farmer near Merrit (sic) had committed suicide by hanging last Saturday afternoon. He was found dead by his son in the barn, where he had deliberately committed the act. He had climbed upon a box, adjusted a rope around his neck so the knot was under his chin, tied his own hands and jumped into eternity. He had been very despondent for several weeks on account of poor health and his action was not entirely unexpected by his family, who had been carefully watching him for some time. Mr. Allen came here from Iowa, was a well, educated and a well informed man. He was very ambitious and although in a state of health that would have discouraged most men from work, he was always on the move and actively engaged in farm work and in securing a home for his family. It is deeply regretted that he could not have lived to enjoy the results of his labor. - Elk City Record.
