As a result of burns received in a fire which destroyed the residence and contents belonging to Mrs. J. C. Lewis yesterday afternoon about 2:30 o'clock, Mrs. Mary Ard mother of Mrs. Lewis, lies dead at the undertaking rooms of J. M. Walker. Mrs. Pet Wade, Mrs. Lewis 20 year old daughter lies at the point of death and little hope is entertained for her recovery. The family have been living on this farm belonging to Joe McReynolds for the past year, and Mrs. Ard, mother of Mrs. Lewis, has been making her home with them, the family consisted of Mrs. Lewis, three sons and three daughters, Mrs. Ard and a little daughter of Mrs. Wade. It is not known just how the fire originated. No one was in the house at the time it was discovered except Mrs. Ard, Mrs. Wade and her little daughter. Mrs. Wade heard the flames in the kitchen and opened the door to see what the matter immediately the flames broke into the room in which Mrs. Ard and the little girl were lying on the bed. Mrs. Wade grabbed up her grandmother and carried her out and returning carried the little girl out. While she was rescuing the little girl, Mrs. Ard returned to the room for pictures and other relics, and when she went into the room was soon overcome. As soon as Mrs. Wade came out again and saw that her grandmother had gone back in the room, she started to rescue but as soon as she entered the room she saw her grandmother was dead so she started to go out herself. As she entered the room door shut behind her and she could not open it. By this time the room was a veritable furnace but finally she succeeded in breaking the panel of the door and crawled out through the hole. Mrs. Wade was horribly burned about the face and arms, and the physicians have little hope for her recovery. The building and all its contents were destroyed.
