Hiram Baxley, of near Sweetwater, was attacked in his pasture last Friday by a mad bull, and received wounds that caused his death Friday night. Being very weak from an operation of few days previous, Mr. Baxley could offer little resistance and it is thought that the bull had butted and trampled his prey for about two hours before he was discovered by Mrs. Baxley. Mrs. Baxley offered heroic defense, with both a shot gun and pitch fork, but her efforts failed to drive away the bull. She succeeded, however, in calling a neighbor who moved Mr. Baxley out of reach of the bull. Expert surgeons were called, but upon examination, pronounced his injuries fatal. The funeral services were conducted by the Masonic fraternity of Sweetwater, of which order the deceased was a member, last Sunday afternoon.
