(21 Feb 1929, Thursday, Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): Fatal Explosion Was Caused By Kerosene Poured Over Coals In Stove. As a result of burns from an explosion caused by pouring kerosene on smouldering (sic) coals in a stove Monday afternoon, Anna Brooks, eleven year old daughter of Mrs. Rena Brooks, died at the Tisdal hospital in Sayre Tuesday morning. The Brooks girl, who lived at 310 north Fourth street, was attending the Sayre grade school but remained at home Monday when she felt ill. About 4:30 in the afternoon she attempted to build up a fire in the stove by pouring kerosene on it. An explosion resulted which threw the burning contents of the stove over the girl's body. Walter Stockman (sic), who was in the home at the time, wrapped the girl in a quilt taken from the bed and put out the flames. Stockman received serious burns on his arms. The victim of the accident was taken to the Tisdal hospital where she received medical attention. She died Tuesday morning. (Note: The remainder is too dark to read; but, there is a comment that the father died while the family lived near Grimes.)
