He with his wife and two children, a brother and his father, came over Wednesday, the men to work in the broom corn harvest and the woman and children to visit relatives in Oklahoma City. The two young men went on the train to assist Roy's wife and children on board, and when coming off the younger man came off first, he fell but received only very slight injuries, the older, the husband, slipped and fell under the train. His head was crushed into a pulp and the forefinger of the left hand was cut entirely off. No one witnessed the awful death as the car which he was on had reached the east end of the platform and the night was quite dark. Those who were at the depot say the train had moved more than the length of three cars when he fell. As the train was not moving rapidly it is thought the men were not accustomed to getting on and off moving trains and did not understand just how to get off was the reason of the fall. A telegram was sent to Clinton to have his wife stopped and she returned to Elk City on the 10:42 train. The body was taken to Carpenter's undertaking parlors and prepared for burial. The body will be taken to Port for burial. Deceased was a member of the Baptist church. (25 Aug 1911, Friday, Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): Mr. Brooks, who lived near Poarch had come to Elk City to put his wife and children on the train, as they were on their way to visit relatives. Mr. Brook (sic) assisted them on No. 44 last night. The train started before he got off and in alighting from the train it is supposed he fell under it and his body was discovered at once, the head cut open , one hand cut off and the body otherwise badly mangled. Telegrams were sent to Clinton to overtake Mrs. Brooks, but our informant did not know whether or not they were successful.
