She died at Carter, Oklahoma, February 3, 1929, at the age of 19 years, 10 months and 22 days. Funeral services were held Monday, February 4, at the First Baptist church at 3:00 p.m. Rev. H. W. Shirley officiated. Interment was made at East Fairlawn cemetery. Gentry-Killough, directors, were in charge. (8 Feb 1929, The Carter Express, Carter, Beckham Co, OK): Saturday morning Miss Burnett, who taught fifth grade in the Carter public school, was overcome by gas fumes in the bathroom at the home of C. A. Foster, where she boarded. Because she had been in the bathroom so long Mrs. Foster became alarmed and broke the door lock, when she discovered the young teacher sitting in a chair, with her body slightly inclined forward and her clothing near by. She was preparing to visit her parents who live about five miles from Elk City, which had been her custom every week-end. On Friday night she had visited a local store and examined some of the new spring goods. Upon finding the girl unconscious Mrs. Foster carried her to bed and called a physician, and artificial respiration was attempted, but she never rallied, and her death occurred about 3:30 Sunday morning. An ambulance had been called from Elk City for the purpose of taking her to a hospital, but her death occurred before its arrival, and her body was taken to the Elk City funeral home and prepared for burial. Miss Barnett and Miss Bissett occupied a room together, but the latter left Friday afternoon for her home near Sayre, and was not present when the tragic event happened. School was dismissed Monday in order that the faculty, school directors and students might attend the funeral, which was held at the First Baptist church of Elk City conducted by her pastor. Active pall bearers were Jack Davis, G. C. Mitchel and J. E. Watkins, directors, S. L. Simpkins, superintendent and Haskell and Lee McDonald, grade teachers. Miss Burnett was nineteen years old. She had been a loyal member of the Baptist church since her fourteenth year, and it is said that nothing delighted her more than assembling a group of small children and escorting them of Sunday School. She was a graduate of the Elk City high school and was serving her second year as teacher of the fifth grade in the Carter school.
