(3 Dec 1929, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): SERVICES ARE HELD TODAY FOR SUICIDE VICTIM. G. E. (sic) Carmichael Is Found Hanging From Rafter Sunday Afternoon. Services for H. G. Carmichael, suicide victim and well known Beckham county farmer, who lived on the south outskirts of Elk City, were conducted at 3 o'clock this afternoon by his old friend, Murray Orgain, under the auspices of the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows in the Grubitz and Son funeral parlors. Mr. Carmichael was found shortly after noon yesterday by his son, Fred Carmichael, hanging from the rafter of a barn at their slaughter pen south of the city. He had left the house about 10 o'clock in the morning saying that he was going to the farm a few hundred yards up the road to pick up some cobs for fuel, his widow said. He was missed at dinner when several of his family had come for a re-union, so, soon after the meal his son went to look for him. A doctor was called about 2:45 o'clock and as soon as he arrived pronounced Mr. Carmichael dead. The ambulance and an attorney came at about the same time as the doctor but the body was left suspended while a return trip for Judge F. W. Snoddy, acting coroner, was made. The coroner pronounced the case "suicide," as the result of the inquest. Occasion for the act was explained by his widow when she recalled an accident in which Mr. Carmichael suffered a serious head injury three years ago. He never quite recovered from this injury, she said, and was never "quite right." This and the weight of worry accompanying a recent business transaction in which his two farms south of the city were in consideration for the place west of the city are given as probable cause for the suicide. Mr. Carmichael lived near here for the past nine years and during that time built up a wide acquaintance, his friends here say. He was recognized as one of the foremost farmers in this immediate community and was known far as a man of high esteem. He was born in Indiana 69 years ago, and moved with his family to Missouri when he was three years old. He and Mrs. Carmichael had been married for 45 years, following their ceremony in Claremont, Mo. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Carmichael, a daughter, Mrs. J. R. Thigpen, in Oklahoma City and three sons, Fred Carmichael and J. R. Carmichael, of this city, and G. E. Carmichael who lives in California. The daughter was here for the funeral but the son in California was unable to be here. Interment was made in the Fairlawn cemetery, with Grubitz and Son directors, in charge.
