Clay was thrown from a buggy Tuesday night as she was returning home with her husband from the entertainment at the auditorium, and received injuries from which she died at 11:45 the same night. The accident occurred on Fourth street within one block of the Clay residence. The horse driven by Mr. Clay suddenly became frightened and commenced to kick. At the same time one of the lines broke and as the horse ran in a circle Mrs. Clay was thrown from the buggy to the ground. It is not known whether or not the horse's hoof struck her after she fell, but when she was carried to her home and an examination was made by the attending physician, it was discovered that death resulted from concussion of the brain. She was unconscious from the time of the accident until her death at 11:45. The news of Mrs. Clay's death Wednesday morning cast a gloom over the entire city. She and her husband had attended the entertainment given at the auditorium that night in which their daughter, Miss Ima Clay had taken part, and within an hour after they had left the auditorium her husband and children looked upon her lifeless body cold in death. Julia Elberta Clay was born in Upsher (sic) County, Texas, December 14th, 1857, and at the time of her death she was fifty-five years, four months and twenty-four days of age. She was a consistent christian woman, loved by her associates and friends, and was the idol of her husband and children who are bowed in sorrow and grief because of their loss. Funeral services will be held at the Methodist church today, May 9th, at 2:00 o'clock p.m., conducted by Rev. Seaton, assisted by Rev. Wages of the Methodist church. (9 May 1912, Erick Altruist, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): While returning to their home from the auditorium Tuesday night Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Clay of Sayre jumped from the buggy when the line broke and Mrs. Clay sustained a fractured skull and died soon afterward from the injuries. (10 May 1912, The Carter Express, Carter, Beckham Co, OK): A telephone message from Sayre Wednesday morning about 1 o'clock, to Mrs. W. B. Rosser, conveyed the sad news that her mother, Mrs. J. D. Clay was killed. W. B. Rosser and wife called at the electric light plant and made arrangements with B. R. James to carry them to Sayre in his Ford auto, and they made the trip in less than an hour. Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Clay had attended the show and were returning home when their horse took fright and began to run around in a circle. Mrs. Clay jumped out of the buggy, and fell violently to the sidewalk. She begun (sic) spitting up blood, and was soon unconscious, and died in a very short time. Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Clay are well and favorably known thruout (sic) Beckham county, they having been engaged in the mercantile business at Sayre ever since the town started. This is a severe shock to her husband and daughters, Mrs. Middleton, of Sayre; Mrs. W. B. Rosser of Carter; Mrs. Percy Wightman of California; and sons Tom and Coot Clay of Sayre. The sincere sympathy of their many friends is extended to them in the loss of a wife and a loving and devoted mother. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
