(18 Dec 1919, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): BLACKSMITH FOUND DEAD NEAR HOME. Appoplexy (sic) Believed to Have Caused the Death of W. A. Cox as He Hurried to Catch Train. Mrs. Allen Lovelady brought in the following notice from Lawton papers of the death of Wm. Cox, formerly of Elk City: William A. Cox, 42 years old, a former blacksmith here, was found dead at 6:30 o'clock this morning, on the sidewalk in front of 1912 Seventh Street, where he is believed to have been stricken some time after midnight, while returning from the Frisco station. The body was found two doors from his home, 916 Seventh Street. Mr. Cox left his home about midnight with the intention of going to the Frisco, to take the late train to Burkburnett. He told his wife that if the train was very late that he would return home instead of waiting for it. It is believed that he was on his way home, when stricken. The body was discovered lying across the sidewalk by a neighbor, who was on his way to work. The police were notified. Patrolman Richardson went to the place, then notified the county authorities. County Attorney Gensman and Deputy Sheriff Pike Pierce made an investigation, deciding that death was due to natural causes. No marks of violence or foul play of any kind were discovered. The body is believed to have been lying on the sidewalk since shortly after midnight until discovered about 6:30 this morning. Due to the extremely low temperature it was frozen when found. Mr. Cox had been troubled with a severe case of asthma. It is thought he had an attack of the disease or been stricken with apoplexy as he was approaching his home. The body is being held at St. Clair's until the arrival of the father of the dead man, from Eldorado, Okla. Mr. Cox is survived by his wife and several children. He formerly owned a blacksmith shop on Second street between E and F avenue, but sold it some time ago. The family came to Lawton from Mangum. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
