His death was thought to have been caused by poisonous salts given him. His older sister, Nettie, also suffered a severe attack but seems past danger now. Everyone joins in sympathy with the bereaved ones. Mrs. Bell of Sayre is here with her sister, Mrs. C. E. Shook. (19 Sep 1924, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): A SAD DEATH OF YOUNG BOY. Elmer Dill, the eight year old son of Mrs. C. E. Shook, living in Pixlee neighborhood, died last Thursday morning and a sister, Nettie, was seriously ill from the effects, it is thought, of taking some salts which seemed to have contained poison. The salts was purchased a few weeks ago in a drug store here, but was one of the sealed packages. Mrs. Shook had taken a dose the evening before giving some to the children, but she was not able to keep it down, so that saved her, but she did not think of anything being wrong because of the medicine. Next morning when the children complained of having headache and not wanting any breakfast, she thought the medicine would help them. The boy and his sister then commenced rolling marbles to each other on the floor and Mrs. Shook started to go out doors when suddenly the little boy called to her that he was very sick at the stomach. He started to leave room but fell before reaching the door and though everything possible was done for him he passed away in a short time. While working with him, his sister, Nettie, became quite ill, but having thrown up part of the medicine she was not so serious and though suffering a severe attack was fully recovered in a few days. A post mortem was held by the doctors over the boy and stomach removed so that a full investigation could be made and also the salts will be examined. It was a most distressing accident, but medicine having come in a sealed package no blame is given to the druggist. Funeral services were held at the home. In the absence of the Rev. Walter, the pastor, Rev. O. L. Adams of the M. E. Church South conducted the services, giving many comforting words to the heart broken mother and other relatives. The body was laid to rest in the Thompson cemetery. The deepest sympathy is expressed by all to the mother, sisters, step father and other bereaved ones. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
