A. (Bill) Eaton who at one time resided near Durham and later near Leedey and who for some time resided in Oklahoma City, took his own life near Leedey last Monday evening by shooting himself in the head with a shot gun at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dearman, one mile north of Red Star school house. It appears from the report of the tragedy and circumstances surrounding it that, Eaton had suffered from a sunstroke a short time ago, and that he and a Mrs. Eads came to visit the Dearman home, Mrs. Dearman and Mrs. Eads being sisters. Mr. Eaton has a brother, Tom Eaton and also a married daughter who reside in the Red Star community. The Dearman's and Mrs. Eads went to Leedey Monday afternoon and Eaton said that he didn't feel well and that he would stay at home. About an hour later he drove his car to the home of his brother Tom Eaton. Mr. Eaton was away from home at the time W. A. Eaton arrived. Bill secured a whetstone from Tom Eaton's daughter and sharpened his knife until Tom returned home. W. A. Eaton asked Tom to drive him over to see his daughter, Myrtle, which he did. His action had been strange and he had talked like an insane man. After he returned to the Tom Eaton home, he slipped away while Mr. Eaton was busy doing the chores about the place. Mr. Eaton took a jug of water and went out to find his brother thinking possibly he had fainted. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
