(6 May 1926, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): CAMARGO MAN FATALLY INJURED IN AUTO ACCIDENT. Another In Hospital Not Expected To Recover, Excessive Speed Claimed. A. R. Edwards is dead and F. W. Evans is in a critical condition in the hospital at Woodward, as a result of an automobile accident at Camargo Saturday afternoon. Both are prominent farmers in the Camargo community. Joe Collins of near Camargo and D. E. Logan of Leedey were in the car which is said to have been driven at an excessive speed through the street. The car was going west and when the main intersection of the town was reached the car swerved and struck the concrete sidewalk across the street from the bank, righted itself and struck a truck, stopping it. Evans and Edwards were standing where the car first struck the sidewalk. Edward's foot was practically crushed off, making amputation necessary. He was also injured internally and died at the Woodward hospital Tuesday. Evans suffered a broken leg and severe bruises and at last reports was not expected to recover. It is said that Armstrong was in the rear seat of the car drunk and that both Collins and Logan were intoxicated. It is also reported that two or three gallons of whiskey was found in the car. Feeling ran high as a result of the tragedy and the men were hurried to Taloga for safe keeping according to the report of a Camargo man. It seems that this is not the first offense of Logan. It is said that he was fined for a similar stunt pulled in Leedey in which no one was injured. Collins was before the court on a still case a short time ago. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
