Mrs. Leverett received a clipping from a Kansas City paper telling of the sad death of a little girl who formerly lived in Elk city. Her father was at one time rural carrier out from this post-office. The following is what the paper told of the accident. "SAFETY " CAR KILLED A GIRL. Pauline Evans, 7, was on her way Home From School, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Evans, 4632 Summit street, was killed shortly after 3:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon when run over by a north bound Sunset Hill "safety" car on Belleview avenue, between forty-sixth and forty-seventh streets. Pauline, a student of the Swinney school, Forty-seventh street and West Prospect Place, was on her way home from school, accompanied by Robert Newcomb, the 6 year old son of R. R. Newcomb, 4709 Summit street. True to the usual school boy custom, Robert carried Pauline's books. Suddenly Pauline decided to cross the street. A Sunset Hill car was going south. She stopped until it passed and then started across. The rear end of the car obstructed her view and she did not see the north bound car coming down the hill. The car is said to have been going at a fast rate of speed when it struck her. She was killed instantly, her chest being crushed and her right arm severed. Patrolmen from the Westport police station arrested J. W. Page, 4436 Forest avenue, motorman-conductor on the car. He was taken to the prosecutor's office, but later released when information was received from the coroner's office that an inquest would be held Saturday morning. (26 Mar 1920, Elk City Press, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): News was received this week by friends of Mr. and Mrs. John Evans, that their daughter, Pauline, was run over by a street car in Wichita, Kansas, last Thursday and fatally injured. Mr. and Mrs. Evans formerly lived here and are well known. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
