Fowler of Sweetwater died Monday night at the Tisdal hospital. Mr. Fowler was brought in from Sweetwater, Monday afternoon, his back had been broken in three places. Last Sunday night Mr. Fowler, his wife and children, attended the evening services at the church in Sweetwater, as they left the church they walked down the road a ways to Mr. Fowler's store. Mr. Fowler was carrying the baby, Mrs. Fowler was leading the two older children. Suddenly there came up behind them a car, it is said there were no lights on the car, the wind was blowing, and the car was upon them before they knew it. Mr. Fowler, thinking of his wife and little children first, and wanting to save them, hastily shoved them off into a ditch at the side of the road, but before he could jump after them the car swerved and hit him. The little baby was knocked out of his arms and thrown down the road a ways, Mr. Fowler was dragged more than fifteen feet before he got free from the car, the car then plunged off a culvert. The parties in the car were uninjured. The baby when picked up had a large cut above its eye and it was very badly shaken up. Mr. Fowler was brought to the Tisdal Hospital on Monday afternoon, X-ray pictures were taken where it showed three vertebrae were broken and torn all to pieces, he was paralyzed from the neck down. Mr. Fowler died about 11 o'clock on Monday night. (8 Apr 1926, Beckham County Democrat, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): A. W. Fowler, Meridian merchant, while walking home from church Sunday night was run down by car driven by W. H. Allen, who was driving without lights. Mr. Fowler was dragged down street, or road, a few feet before the occupants of the car discovered what they had done. He was rushed to Tisdal Hospital at Elk City where he was given skillful aid, but fate was against him and he passed away Monday night. The neighborhood of Meridian are very much grieved over this sad occurance (sic) but let us profit by others misfortune and let this be a lesson to those who drive cars without lights. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
