FRENCH, HILDA L.
(23 May 1912, Erick Altruist, Erick, Beckham Co, OK):
While our hearts are very sad on account of the deplorable accident of
last week which took from our midst one of our brightest young ladies,
another awful accident has happened - the little three year old daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. M. E. French, who live three miles southeast of here, was
burned to death Tuesday evening.
The child was left playing in the yard while its mother and sister went to
the garden.  Thinking she smelled something burning, Mrs. French hastened
to the house where she found the little one enveloped in flames.  As near
as can be ascertained little Hilda had climbed in through the open window
and had found the box of matches with which she ignited her clothing and
some other articles in the room.  Most  all of the clothing was burned
from her body when her mother reached her.  A doctor was called but the
little sufferer's burns had placed her beyond his aid and she died about
one hour after the accident occurred.  The family have the sympathy of the
entire community in their great sorrow.
