(13 Jul 1916, Sayre Standard, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): The 14 year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Pope Frost, living west of Delhi, was drowned last Sunday morning in a tank on the Cook ranch. (13 Jul 1916, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): NEPHEW DROWNED. Mrs. Wm. Hunter returned from Erick, yesterday, where she had been called on account of the drowning of her nephew, Alton Frost, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. P. Frost. The sons of Mannin Brown and Mr. Hunter with Claude Bell, from Elk City, had gone over to Erick to spend the week, take a hike and have a good time. They all went to a pond Saturday, to go in swimming. Young Frost went under twice, but the boys thought he was just playing and only became scared when he went under the third time and failed to rise. By the time help arrived and he was found it was too late to do anything for him. It was a sad ending for the happy time the boys had planned, and much grief was manifested by everyone. Mr. Hunter went over Sunday, to attend the funeral. (13 Jul 1916, Elk City Leader, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Fourteen Year Old Son of H. P. Frost Drowned Sunday. The fourteen year old son of H. P. Frost, who lives on the Henry Hunter farm near Erick was drowned Sunday morning in a tank, near the home of his father. The boy in company with a number of boys about his age had gone to the tank to go in swimming. He reached the water first and had swam about half across the pond when he went down. His companions saw him sink three times but did not realize that he was drowning, and it was only after he had failed to arise after the third time that they suspected that anything was wrong, and gave the alarm. His body was soon recovered, but all efforts to restore him to life failed. The remains were buried in the family burying grounds at Delhi Sunday evening. Henry Hunter and William Hunter of this city attended the funeral. The boy was a good swimmer and it is believed that he was stricken with cramps which disabled him. A number of drownings have been narrowly averted during the past few weeks and it would be well for the boys who are in the habit of going to swim to use more caution. Especially not to jump into the water immediately after reaching it, as often the cold water is too great a shock for their system and as a result they lose their life before aid is given. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
