The morning was foggy and the train turned a curve close to the hand car before the men knew a train was near them. One man was killed and two slightly injured and the car demolished. Santos Gomas, the man who was killed and who has a brother working in the gang, ran down the track instead of jumping off and was terribly mangled. Both legs cut off, body mangled to a pulp and head cut open, part of which could not be found. Antonio Villaygus was hurt in the knee and Vanada Ortega hurt in the hip. The remains of the unfortunate man were brought to Sayre on the freight train and buried Saturday afternoon in Sayre cemetery at the expense of the railroad company, L. T. Burton having charge of the burial. Seven of the section crew were Mexicans from Salamanca, Mexico. The accident happened at 7:35 a.m. about 3/4 of mile east of Doxey. ---------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
