(2 Sep 1920, Thursday, Sayre Standard, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): A shadow of gloom was cast over Sayre and vicinity last Saturday morning when a telegram was received here by the Rock Island agent that a man having letters identifying him as Ted Gossett of Sayre, Okla., had been killed by a train on the Frisco tracks at Carl Junction, near Joplin, Mo. It was found immediately that the unfortunate victim was Theodore R. Gossett, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Gossett who live five miles north of this city. The parents were notified and Horace Barker, son-in-law of Mr. Gossett, left on the noon train for Missouri to take charge of the body. It was brought here Monday night and was taken to the farm home north of the city where funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon by Rev. Martin. Many friends and relatives of the family were present. On Tuesday night, the body was shipped to Edmond, Oklahoma, for burial. The best reports obtainable on the accident are that Gossett, who is nearly twenty-one years old, had gone to Missouri in search of work and had stopped at Joplin where it is supposed that he accepted a position at the powder works near the railroad junction where he met his fate. It was found that a man of his description had promised to show up for work that night at the powder plant at 12 o'clock. He was struck at 11 o'clock by a Frisco train and it is supposed that he was on his way to the plant for duty. His body was not mangled but was struck and knocked clear of the track resulting in several broken bones and a concussion of the skull. His death was instant. The young man was one of our finest families. He had lived here for many years and was highly respected by all who knew him. Ted, as he was known to his many friends, was very industrious, and had a very bright future before him. His sudden demise is only another example of the kind of accidents which bring regrets to all who hear the news. The many friends of the family deeply sympathize with the bereaved relatives of the young man. (9 Sep 1920, Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): Obituary. Theodore R.
