Charlie Givers (sic) and Monroe Mattocks were digging a well, using dynamite to loosen the earth and rock. Givers went down in the well too soon after an explosion and signaled to be drawn up. When nearly out he fell back, overcome by the gas. Mattocks then called to neighbors for help. On their arrival he directed them to lower him into the well and he would fasten a rope to the other man when he was to be pulled up and in turn would assist in raising the first man. He succeeded in fastening the rope, signaled to be drawn up, and was almost in reach of the top, when he, too, was overcome by the gas and fell back to the bottom. It was nearly an hour before the bodies were secured. Both were married men, living on claims near Hammon and their families have the sympathy of all in their sudden and awful affliction. ---------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
