W. GUM OF SAYRE. Mrs. Emmett Wall, clerk in the county recorder's office at Sayre, was driving down Main St., Wednesday evening very slowly, when P. W. Gum, an old settler, stepped from behind cars parked in the middle of the street, directly in front of Mrs. Wall's car, and the accident was purely accidental as reported by many who saw the accident, and his son in law, Guy Ford. Mr. Gum was past eighty years of age, and death was almost instant. (6 Apr 1922, Thursday, Erick Democrat, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): (from Daily Oklahoman): P. W. Gum Killed by auto. Sayre, March 29. - (Special) - P. W. Gum, 80 years old, father of Eugene P. Gum, secretary of the Oklahoma Bankers' association, and pioneer of this district, was killed instantly when struck by an automobile driven by Mrs. E. E. Wall, deputy county clerk, Wednesday afternoon. The accident, which occured (sic) on one of the main business corners, was avoidable, according to witnesses. Gum started to cross the street but stepped directly in front of the car, it was stated. His neck was broken. Mrs. Wall is said to have been in a hysterical condition since the accident. Gum is survived by his widow, two sons, Earl S. Gum of California and Eugene P. Gum of Oklahoma City, and two daughters, Mrs. E. D. Pritchard of Oklahoma City and Mrs. Guy Ford, Sayre. Gum came to Sayre in 1900 and established Beckham county's first bank, then the Bank of Sayre. The bank now is the Second County National bank.
