(4 Jan 1930, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): WIFE DISCOVERS BODY OF MATE. J. M. Hammonds (sic) Committed Suicide by Hanging Self In Barn, Indication The body of J. M. Hammonds, a farmer living near Berlin and well known in this community, was found hanging in a barn at the family home early this morning by Mrs. Hammonds. Despondency is believed to have caused Mr. Hammonds to take his life. He is said to have been in an automobile accident only a few weeks ago and this is given as a possible cause for his act. Neighbors also said that Mr. Hammonds had been trying to rent a farm during the past several weeks and that his failure to find the type of farm he desired had caused him some worry. Went to Do Feeding. Mr. Hammonds arose this morning as usual and went to the barn to do the morning feeding. When breakfast was ready and her husband did not return to the home, Mrs. Hammonds went to the barn to investigate and there found the body. He is believed to have been dead only a short time when Mrs. Hammonds found the body. A high type man, Mr. Hammonds was highly regarded by a large number of persons whom he numbered as his friends. His passing proved a severe shock to them as well as to his widow and six children, three sons and three daughters. Mr. Hammonds for several years lived near Hammon where he engaged in farming but about a year ago he moved with his family to the Berlin community. Three of his children are residents of this city.
