As a result of a quarrel between Edward Gibson and Thomas Hanse (sic) at the Iowa school house Tuesday night of last week, the former, a seventeen-year-old boy, is under arrest and confined in the county jail at Sayre charged with murder. It is alleged that Gibson stabbed Hanse with a knife, cutting a deep wound in his abdomen from the effects of which Hanse died last Thursday night at 10:30 o'clock. The trouble between the two young men occurred in the school house yard during literary exercises. Immediately following the cutting Gibson fled and was not found until Friday morning following when Sheriff Francis, who was scouring the country in search of the young man, found him in a field near Delhi where he had been concealed during the night. Hanse was about 20 years of age. Parents of both the young men live in the same neighborhood southwest of Erick. Judge Minton, of Erick, has been employed to defend Gibson. (8 Apr 1915, Sayre Standard, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): Edward Gibson, the seventeen-year-old boy who is charged with the murder of Thomas Hanse at the Iowa school house on March 23, was given his preliminary hearing before County Judge McComas last Tuesday. A number of witnesses were examined and many from the neighborhood where the crime is alleged to have been committed were here to listen to the evidence in the case. County Attorney Leach is assisted in the prosecution by Judge Hendrix, and the defense is represented by Judge Minton of Erick, and Judge Gipson, of Sayre. After hearing the evidence in the case Judge McComas bound the defendant over to the district court without bail. ---------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
