Ernest was at bat and was unable to dodge a wide one, the ball striking him in the temple. At first it was thought that he was only stunned, and after a little rest resumed his place in the game, but after a little time was compelled to quit, and went to the office of Dr. J. M. Steele, at Berlin, where he soon became unconscious. He was removed to the home of J. M. Williams, and an Elk City physician summoned, an operation being performed, in the effort to save his life by relieving the pressure upon the brain, but without success, and he passed away at an early hour Monday morning. Ernest was a son of the late Gottfried Hanni, and quite widely known among the farmers of this section because of his activity in the interest of better stock on the farms of this section, he having gained quite a reputation as a pure bred breeder of cattle, hogs and poultry. Mr. Hanni leaves a wife and two children, in addition to a mother and several brothers. (7 Jun 1923, Thursday, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): DIES AFTER BEING HIT WITH BALL. Earnest Hanni of three miles north of Doxey died at one o'clock Monday morning as a result of being hit with a ball during a game at Berlin on Saturday afternoon. When hit, Hanni was at the bat and spectators say he dodged as the ball was thrown but it struck him on the head knocking him to the ground. His brother picked him up and soon regained consciousness and went back into the game for another winning (sic), but he soon became so sick he went to the home of Dr. Steele nearby and from there to his sister's, three miles from Berlin, where his wife was spending the afternoon. He continued to grow worse until he became unconscious and on Sunday morning Dr. Tisdal operated, removing a clot of blood from the brain, but Hanni never regained consciousness and died at 1 a.m. Funeral services were held at the Doxey-Sayre cemetery at two o'clock Wednesday. Many friends and relatives were gathered there to pay the last tribute of respect. The deceased leaves a wife and two children, a number of other relatives and a host of friends to mourn his untimely death. Young Hanni will be remembered by many in Elk City, especially those connected with the Beckham County fair, for each year he brought an exhibit of fine registered cattle. Mr. Hanni is the brother-in-law of John Dareninger of Elk City. ---------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
