The three months old babe was burned to death and Mrs. Harmon was badly burned while trying to rescue the babies. Her condition is very critical. An older child was dragged from the flames in an unconcious (sic) condition but soon revived. The infant was taken from the ashes and was buried Sunday. We sincerely hope that Mrs. Harmon will soon recover. (1 Aug 1912, Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): Word reached this city Monday of a shocking accident which occurred near Buffalo on Sunday last. It seems that Mrs. Fred Harmon and two small children were at home alone, and Mrs. Harmon had occasion to go to a well some little distance from the house, after a pail of water. While drawing the water she heard one of the children scream, and turned to see her home in flames. She rushed frantically back to the house and endeavored to rescue a three months old babe which she had left lying upon the bed, being very badly burned in the attempt, but being driven back by the flames. The house was entirely consumed, and the little child perished in the flames. Mr. and Mrs. Harmon also lost their entire household effects, and are left in very straightened circumstances. ---------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
